Just in case some new folks don't know, most supplement capsules contain gelatin in the capsule, derived from various animals parts. You can find vegetarian/vegan capsules and it generally only costs a couple bucks more for the bottle. It will say in the ingredients.

That site gives a very comprehensive list of animal-derived ingredients in processed foods. It's much better to just avoid heavily processed ingredients, but the list is excellent for checking anything you're not sure of on a food label.

In the rare pinch when I've missed a meal time they've kept me going. A bag of mixed dried fruit and nuts are also easy and portable. I keep baggies of almonds and dried cranberries that I can grab on my way out the door or carry with me to bust out when I'm hungry and low on energy. Having something tasty and vegan ready on hand helped keep me away from carb-heavy vending machines and fast food stops on campus. For a really sustaining breakfast try plain soy yogurt with ground flaxseeds and muesli."

CygnusX1, I can understand your point. I actually know a lot of vegetarians that are pro-life. My mom in fact was very big in the pro-life movement but found many of them hypocritical as they showed so little interest in animal welfare (she's a vegetarian).
For my own body, I'm pro-life (I wouldn't get an abortion), but I also don't tell others what to do. So I vote pro-choice and am pro-choice as far as others go. Same w/ veganism. I don't tell others not to eat meat. I just live according to my own conscience. So I guess you could say I'm pro-choice for everything, as I believe in letting other people make their own decisions. Especially when you look at the history of what's happened to women...
But overall, I commend you for being able to think these things through - too many people let others do their thinking for them. Nice to have you on VegWeb!

We do not have the right to dictate what kind of existence these species are to endure. Due to the fact they cannot speak or communicate in ways in which we feel are comparable to our own, does not mean they do not feel fear.

Kinda like the fear a unborn baby might feel when the suction tool gets closer and closer.
Look, I can appreciate the plight that animals in these type of facilities face...especially in the context of "A good man is concerned for the welfare of his animals - Proverbs 12:10"...I'm just lookin' for a little consistency here from the movement as a whole. In a way, I feel like were on the same team because we both stick up for defenceless, innocent life...and that's a good thing!

Just about the hydration issue - we covered it in my nutrition degree, and simply:
drink water when you are thirsty
You may need to learn to regcognise the thirst, many people do get it confused for hunger, but don't worry too much about precisely how much you are drinking in a day. Just try and always have access to water so you can drink when you are thirsty (ie carry a drink bottle is a good idea)
Drinking water not soft drink is an easy step if you're worried about your weight - softdrink is full of empty calories, and (as a side not) it's not very environmentally friendly - so much shipping :-)
Australia (where I live) is now teaching that beer, tea, and coffee (not esspresso or spirits) can be counted as fluid intake. Yes they are diruetic, but if you're not drinking heaps and heaps of them, the effect is very small. Weird, I know, but my lecturer was very firm on this point.
Anyway, good luck!!

a1k0n - Thanks for the post. I always thought that glucose and fructose were metabolized the same way. I was amazed to find that fructose is metabolized completely by the liver, has a worse effect on the liver than alcohol (ethanol), and turns into fat.
So since fructose and ethanol are metabolized like fat, a low fat diet will not be low fat if there is enough fructose in the diet or alcoholic beverages in the diet.
rainbow Brenda thanks for the info on Dr John McDougall. I picked up his book and it has some good tips in it.
Shimmeringlight also helpful advice
especially how sometimes we are thirsty and mistake it for hunger.

We do not have the right to dictate what kind of existence these species are to endure. Due to the fact they cannot speak or communicate in ways in which we feel are comparable to our own, does not mean they do not feel fear.
(Apologies in advance for trolling)
