  • Matador Meets Karma: Graphic Goring Caught on Tape
By The PETA Files on May 24th, 2010 | Comments Off Comments

I would have liked to have titled this blog “Bull: 1, Matador: 0,” but unfortunately, in the world of bullfighting torturing, even when the bull wins, he loses. Even though he clearly won this “fight,” the bull in the below video was reportedly killed by other matadors after running a horn through one bullfighter’s throat.

    Warning: Graphic video below.

You can see still photos on The Huffington Post.

The matador, Julio Aparicio, was rushed to the hospital in critical condition but is expected to recover. Wish we could say the same for the bull.

Let this serve as a reminder: Never book a trip to Spain that includes tickets to a bullfight. Better yet, don’t book a trip to Spain at all until it abolishes this abomination (unless you plan to participate in an anti-bullfighting protest,
    of course).

  • It’s the End of the World as We Know It–and I Feel Fine
By The PETA Files on May 24th, 2010 | Comments Off Comments
    Mushroom Cloud

Did the film 2012 give you nightmares? Have you made plans for worldwide apocalypse yet? If not, check it: The Vivos Group is selling spots in fully stocked disaster-proof underground bunkers, complete with power systems, water wells, waste disposal, gym equipment—the works.

There would be little reason to survive, say, a nuclear holocaust, only to die of heart disease or a stroke, so PETA sent the Vivos Group an urgent letter explaining the health benefits of a vegan diet and asking the firm to stock its bunkers with healthy plant-based foods. Plus, a post-apocalyptic vegan diet would spare any surviving animals more terror by making sure that they aren’t exploited and killed for food.

I don’t know about you, but I’m not the world-rebuilding type—after Hurricane Ike, I was barely able to survive for nine days without electricity. But daily life is plenty challenging, and choosing vegan foods over meat, milk, and eggs can give us a significant advantage. So don’t wait for Armageddon to make the switch to a better diet!

  • Former ‘Lara Croft’ Model Can’t Bear the Cruelty
By The PETA Files on May 24th, 2010 | Comments Off Comments

Look who PETA U.K. uncovered earlier today on the Westminster Bridge:

    Lucy Clarkson

Who knew the Westminster Bridge had such curves?!
    Lucy Clarkson

Wearing little more than painted-on Queen’s Guard uniforms and faux-fur caps, former Lara Croft model Lucy Clarkson and PETA U.K. campaigners protested the use of real bearskins in The Queen’s Guards’ ceremonial caps. Under the previous government, the Ministry of Defence refused to switch to synthetic fur despite Britons’ overwhelming opposition to the use of real bear fur.

Lovely Lucy joins Ricky Gervais, Pamela Anderson, Sir Roger Moore, Joss Stone, and a host of other notables who’ve spoken out against this cruelty. Will you, too, speak up for bears?

  • Music Icon Sings for Seals
By The PETA Files on May 24th, 2010 | Comments Off Comments

What was the grooviest thing about having hippie parents? Growing up listening to Donovan. Seriously, my mother almost named me “Jennifer Juniper.” Instead she went for something more mainstream—Skylark.

And I’m sure he hears it all the time, but I’m not exaggerating when I say that I’m Donovan’s biggest fan. Star-struck? Yes, consider me struck. What’s even more striking is that this folk/pop legend lent his anti–seal slaughter anthem “Celia of the Seals” to this heart-wrenching new video:

Here’s what the “Sunshine Superman” had to say about his song and putting an end to the war on baby seals:

“I wrote this song to show what’s going on. And the song is influenced by Celia Hammond, the great 60s model who is such a Green Goddess for all the creatures of the Earth. Shortly after I released ‘Celia of the Seals’ back in the 70s, I was glad to see a reduced demand for seal products worldwide. It’s now disappointing to see that the Canadian government is doing everything it can to prop up this dying, violent industry, including challenging the EU’s recent compassionate decision to ban seal pelts. Instead of trying to salvage this cruel slaughter, the government should listen to the court of public opinion and ban the massacre on ice.”

Celia of the Seals, we know just how you feel. So for the love of Donovan, help us get the word out by showing this video to everyone you know!

  • Shell’s Plans for Arctic Drilling are “Imagineering” not Engineering
By Press and media centre RSS feed on May 21st, 2010 | Comments Off Comments

WWF Issues Detailed Response to Shell’s Proposed Safety Procedures for Offshore Arctic Drilling, Set to Begin as Soon as July 1

Two engineers with extensive experience in the oil industry have stated that Shell Oil’s plans to begin drilling off the coast of Alaska in less than six weeks are fraught with risks that have not been adequately addressed by the company. This echoes concerns voiced by WWF over Shell’s proposed safety procedures for drilling in the Beaufort and Chukchi seas.

Dr. Robert Bea, a former Shell official, and Susan Harvey, who previously worked for British Petroleum, expressed serious concerns about Shell’s drilling plans, noting that a spill in the Arctic could not be cleaned up. Dr Bea of California University, who was attending a briefing co-hosted by WWF, referred to Shell’s plans as “imagineering not engineering.”

Responding to these comments, Colin Butfield, Head of Campaigns, at WWF-UK says:
“The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has provided a stark reminder of the risks of drilling for oil anywhere, so the plans by Shell to drill in the Arctic where a spill would be even more disastrous are, quite simply, ludicrous.”

Shell plans to begin drilling in the Beaufort Sea as soon as July 1 and expand drilling operations to the Chukchi Sea soon thereafter. The company’s drilling vessel, the Frontier Discoverer, is expected to depart Subic Bay, in the Philippines, for the coast of Alaska within days. Nearly 700 leases have been sold in the Beaufort and Chukchi, setting the stage for what WWF officials have called an “Arctic oil rush.”

In a letter to US Interior Secretary, Ken Salazar, WWF addressed Shell’s proposal, point-by-point, illustrating how the technology and procedures have not yet been developed to adequately respond to a spill in Arctic waters. WWF’s analysis noted that drilling in the harsh, remote environment of the Arctic is far more perilous than in the Gulf of Mexico and that the technology and logistical infrastructure does not exist to contain and clean up a spill in the Arctic waters of the Beaufort and Chukchi seas.

As the BP oil spill crisis in the Gulf of Mexico continues to worsen, WWF has called upon President Obama and Secretary Salazar to halt Shell’s planned drilling until the Deepwater Horizon disaster has been fully investigated and the technology and procedures have been put in place to respond to and clean up a spill in the harsh, remote waters of the American Arctic.

Shell’s tar sands operations in Canada have also been called into question, with WWF calling on Shell to be transparent to its investors on the full financial and environmental risks of extracting oil from them.

WWF-UK’s Head of Campaigns, Colin Butfield, added:
“Concerns are growing worldwide about risky activities like deepwater drilling and extracting oil from tar sands. Oil companies like Shell not only need to disclose much more information about the risks they are taking, but they also need to look beyond oil to cleaner energy. Environmentally and financially oil will, in a low-carbon world, become even more of a gamble.”

  • ‘Veggie-Shroud’ to Appear in Catholic Church?
By The PETA Files on May 21st, 2010 | Comments Off Comments

While we here in the States are focused on recently discovered godly gluten, the folks at PETA Germany have offered the Catholic Church the “Veggie-Shroud” to fill the void when the Shroud of Turin is retired on Sunday.

    Veggie Shroud

Debate abounds over the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin, but there’s no mystery surrounding the powerful message put forth by the clearly defined slaughtered pig depicted in the “Veggie-Shroud”: Animals who end up on a dinner plate “died for the diet sins of mankind.”

While we wait to find out whether the Catholic Church will agree to display the “Veggie Shroud,” won’t you urge everyone you know to find savory salvation from the universal cruelty and unholy unhealthiness of flesh-based diets? Catholics, atheists, Muslims, and people of all faiths and views are coming together to say, “Praise Seitan!

  • ‘I’d Rather Be a Zombie Than a NASA Astronaut’
By The PETA Files on May 21st, 2010 | Comments Off Comments

Who wouldn’t, right? Earlier this month, we asked our Twitter followers to let everyone know what they’d rather do than torment animals in NASA’s cruel radiation experiments.

If you haven’t heard, NASA plans to spend $1.75 million of our tax dollars to fund an experiment that entails irradiating squirrel monkeys, socially isolating them in barren cages, and then watching what happens to their minds and bodies. Effects of the radiation exposure may include blindness, brain tumors, and cancer. This is why we pay taxes?

Check out these creative Tweets from the tweeps who are exposing NASA’s monkey-torment plan:

And if you haven’t yet, let NASA know how you feel. It’s not too late, tweeple!

By AWIC on May 21st, 2010 | Comments Off Comments

ScienceDaily – National Institutes of Health (NIH) scientists investigating how prion diseases destroy the brain have observed a new form of the disease in mice that does not cause the sponge-like brain deterioration typically seen in prion diseases. Instead, it resembles a form of human Alzheimer’s disease, cerebral amyloid angiopathy, that damages brain arteries. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/03/100304202246.htm

These people have lost 3 pets this year alone because once they get bored with them, they toss them outside and we live near a very busy highway and they get run over. I am furious with her. I can't believe she would do this? I told her that I had other people interested in giving her a home. If she couldn't or didn't want her, just give her back to me and I would give her to one of the others who did. She told me that she just didn't want me to be mad at her! No, I'm mad at her for giving her to irresponsible people. She is a special needs kitty. Pure white cats with blue eyes are often deaf. And a lot of the times, their sight also deteriorates over time. She already was showing signs of both. She can not be an outdoor cat. She was checked by a vet just last week. She is perfectly healthy. And the vet even told her that the kitty was showing signs of being hearing and vision impaired. She may be able to hear and see a little but not enough to survive outside. She said she understood. I think this alone is what made her not want her anymore. Some people don't deal well with the label "special needs". I completely understand but it still breaks my heart. She is a beautiful little kitty. Fluffy pure white fur and blue eyes. I think she'll be a long haired adult, as well. And just as sweet and angelic as can be. She'll be able to live a happy and normal life but not outside is all. I don't know what to do? Should I knock on these peoples doors and explain to them the circumstances and ask if they'll hand her over to me? Should I do nothing and wait on them to get bored with her and toss her out before I do anything? What would you do? I guess it's true no good deed goes unpunished." I can't believe she would do this? I guess it's true no good deed goes unpunished."
