Definitely not fake, although there is clearly a synchronisation issue between the audio and video. By looking at his hands on the keyboard, I can easily tell he’s playing what we can hear.
Yeah, one of the greatest legends of jazz piano, capable of improvising in the style of Art Tatum and rattling off Chopin etudes, needs to fake a relatively easy rag.
n14e5o15, I ask you this: Why on earth would a world-class pianist like Dick Hyman want to fake a rendition of a straightforward novelty piano solo such as Kitten on the Keys? It doesn’t stand to reason.
n14e5o15, you keep repeating your claim about the authenticity of this video without offering any credible explanation as to why you believe this is so. You just keep spouting “It’s fake, it’s fake” like a great big girl, followed by some utter garbage about pixels. Then, you have the cheek to say that I’m missing the point. Why don’t you grow up?
well said! I remember watching this live on the BBC when it was first broadcast. I went right down the music shop the next morning and placed the music on order! Dick Hyman is no faker, even the suggestion made me laugh! Compared to Hyman everyone else is a faker that much I know! LOL!
A good lesson shown here, is the advantage of learning to play close to the knuckle board.
If you can leap you can bound.
Isn’t life grand when you can get up close and personal.
Lol. And just how does one “fake” playing a piano? Is the live audience watching the keys go down and the hammers striking the strings fake too? Use your brain, pal. The audio portion of the clip was accidentally recorded out of synch with the video. Happens all the time.

It looks fake to me. I can tell from the pixels and from seeing quite a lot of these in my time.

You obviously don’t understand, and I don’t feel like explaining.

Dick Hyman’s onstage personality is dead pan and boring, like an absent minded professor. His playing, though profeccient, is monotonous.

He re-uploaded the clip, same audio, perfectly synchronized. Your idiocy has been exposed.

I like his interpretation..he brings a bit of nostalgia to it.
However, I prefer this piece played with a more rip-roaring,rollicking sense of fun.

Hello I have added the original recording by Zez Confrey from 1921 as a video response. Note how he speeds up on the upwards scramble.
